USA Today: Public schools that refuse to follow Trump’s DEI directive are now in the crosshairs

(May 23, 2025): USA Today reports on the Trump Administration’s investigation into race-based policies and programming at Evanston/Skokie District 65 in Illinois following Southeastern Legal Foundation’s (SLF’s) complaint to the Department of Education. The Department of Education is cracking down on unconstitutional diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in K-12 public schools because they give advantages to one race over another. The Department has warned schools that if they fail to comply and eliminate the unlawful programs, they risk losing federal funding.

The article highlights SLF’s complaint on behalf of a teacher in District 65, notifying the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights that the district’s polices and practices violate federal civil rights law. In one example in the complaint, the district held a training employing racial stereotypes like “white talk” and “color commentary” to indicate that different races communicate differently. The district also sponsored racially segregated affinity groups for students and staff.

Since then, the Department of Education has launched an investigation into the school district.
