Just the News: USDA ends Biden-era disaster relief program standards for farmers based on race, sex: legal watchdog

(July 21, 2025): Just the News reports on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) decision to stop relying on certain designations under Biden-era disaster relief programs that discriminated against white male farmers. Under President Biden, USDA maintained dozens of federal aid programs designed to provide increased benefits to “socially disadvantaged”  farmers, which categorized farmers by race and sex and effectively excluded white male farmers. Recognizing the “socially disadvantaged” designation as discriminatory and unconstitutional, the Trump Administration USDA just announced that it will stop using the term “socially disadvantaged” in its programs.

The USDA praised SLF’s efforts to stop this unconstitutional discrimination, stating that SLF’s recent Strickland v. USDA lawsuit “catalyzed” the long-overdue changes to the federal rules. In Strickland, SLF stopped eight Biden-era disaster relief programs that doled out funds to farmers on the basis of race and sex.

In a statement for SLF, President Kim Hermann said, “This is a big win for SLF, but most importantly it is a huge win for America’s farmers. We are very thankful for the USDA’s revisions to these programs, and we are incredibly proud that we were able to play a part in protecting America’s farmers from race- and sex-based discrimination. Farming is one of the most important and difficult occupations in the world, where their hard work directly impacts everyone. They have to be able to do their jobs without having to worry about DEI nonsense, and we hope to see any forms of discrimination in federal programs come to a complete halt.”
