James Dickey is a Senior Attorney for Southeastern Legal Foundation. James has over a decade of litigation experience, and since 2020 has devoted his legal career to liberty and the rule of law.
In his role as Senior Attorney, James serves as lead counsel on SLF’s cases and works in tandem with SLF’s senior leadership to implement SLF’s litigation strategy. Prior to joining SLF in 2025, James was the lead and later managing attorney at a Minnesota-based public interest law firm for 6-plus years. James is an experienced trial and appellate lawyer; he has been practicing law for more than 12 years, has argued before the Minnesota Supreme Court and federal appeals courts more than a dozen times, has experience in several jury and bench trials, and has argued many hearings in both federal and state district courts. He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School.
Acting upon his personal interest in sound public policy, James also uses his litigation experience to testify before state legislatures. James is a frequent speaker and commentator; he often publishes op-eds and appears in local and national media to discuss his work on pressing issues in the courts.
James is an active member of his church, where he volunteers regularly. He lives in the Twin Cities area with his wife and three daughters.
