(Sept.18, 2025): In an op-ed for The College Fix, Southeastern Legal Foundation (SLF) President Kimberly Hermann urges students to use their voice on campus in the days following Charlie Kirk’s assassination. In the wake of the tragedy, which happened in a place “where freedom of speech is supposed to be most valued and revered,” Hermann urges college students to stand up and fight for their constitutional right to speak freely on campus. “Now, more than ever, we need students to know they are allowed to challenge their professors and peers.”
College students already face censorship in dozens of ways on campus, with colleges attempting to silence them, stop their organizations from gathering or hosting events, or pushing students to far away “free speech zones” when they don’t like their views. But SLF urges students that they have every right to push back, and it urges students to reach out when their rights are violated.
Additionally, SLF offers college students a free legal guide to civil discourse so that they can continue their speech activities on campus without being suppressed.
“Our collective call in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s assassination is to be warriors for truth, goodness, freedom, and peace. At the Southeastern Legal Foundation, we will continue to do our part to ensure that the freedom of speech is cherished and protected, both in the courtroom and on college campuses.”
