SLF speaks at launch of Florida’s Office of Parental Rights

[April 29, 2025]: Southeastern Legal Foundation’s (SLF’s) Kim Hermann joined Attorney General James Uthmeier and other prominent parental rights advocates for the launch of Florida’s Office of Parental Rights, the first state office specifically dedicated to protecting parental rights under the law. Florida started the office to empower parents who have had enough of their school districts overstepping and attempting to push them out of raising their own children.

Speaking before an audience of fourth graders and their parents, SLF explained how schools give out secret surveys to public school children that are often very invasive and ask questions about their own mental health, their parents’ mental health, and family relationships.

And when parents ask for records of those surveys–as one Kentucky mom represented by SLF tried to do–schools tell them no, claiming that the surveys are protected under copyright. Arkansas just became the first state to require schools to produce invasive surveys to parents under public records laws.

SLF recently met with Attorney General Uthmeier to alert him to this issue, to which Uthmeier responded that he was establishing a parental rights office for parents to report government abuses including secret surveys.

“With this Office of Parental Rights, it gives all parents another tool to fight against these secret surveys,” Hermann stated. “The Attorney General is setting the absolute highest gold standard here, and for that I thank [him].”
