Sanctuary Policy Challenged in Georgia

May 14, 2018

ATLANTA, GA:  Southeastern Legal Foundation today filed a public comment with the Georgia Immigration Enforcement Review Board in order to provide legal analysis related to the public complaint filed with the IERB challenging the City of Decatur, Georgia’s sanctuary policies and practices. SLF’s public comment is part of its ongoing efforts to end illegal and unconstitutional sanctuary policies that protect illegal aliens at the expense of taxpayers, communities, and law enforcement.

For the past 18 months, SLF has engaged in a thorough review of so-called “sanctuary” policies adopted and enacted by hundreds of state and local jurisdictions across the United States. This effort has included filing hundreds of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and dozens of state Open Records Act requests in more than a dozen U.S. states, including Georgia, as well as FOIA litigation against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) in order to obtain request documents. The City of Decatur is one of the Georgia local governments that currently maintains sanctuary policies that SLF believes violate both state and federal immigration and sanctuary jurisdiction laws.
