SECOND AMENDMENT VINDICATED AGAIN –
The United States Supreme Court has once again reaffirmed the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms by holding that the right is fully applicable to the States through the Fourteenth Amendment. McDonald v. City of Chicago. A Chicago, IL city ordinance prohibited the registration of most handguns to residents of the city – an effective ban on handgun possession from law-abiding citizens. Following on the heels of the Court’s decision in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), the Court’s decision in this case reaffirms that self-defense is a basic constitutional right, and the right to keep and bear arms is among those fundamental rights necessary to the nation’s system of ordered liberty. SLF submitted an amicus brief in the Heller case. The 5-4 decision was written by Justice Samuel Alito. Freedom-loving Americans are grateful to attorney Alan Gura and others involved in this case.
