One America News: SLF puts schools on notice regarding free speech

(Sept. 23, 2025): Southeastern Legal Foundation (SLF) appears on One America News to discuss its open letter to America’s high schools and universities threatening to take legal action if schools refuse to protect students’ First Amendment rights. The letter was released in the weeks following Charlie Kirk’s assassination on a college campus while engaging in free speech.

SLF’s Kimberly Hermann explains, “If there’s one thing we’ve seen over the last two weeks…it’s an understanding that everyone has First Amendment rights.” The Kirk assassination instilled in many Americans a new resolve to understand and exercise their right to speak, whether it’s in K-12 schools, on college campuses, or beyond. Unfortunately, many high schools and colleges are already trampling on those rights by refusing to recognize new Turning Point chapters or silencing students who want to honor Charlie Kirk.

Through the letter, SLF Is reminding the American public that it stands ready to assist them in the fight to protect their rights. For over a decade, SLF has worked tirelessly to educate the American public–especially college students and organizations such as Turning Point USA, Leadership Institute, and Young America’s Foundation –about their freedom of speech. Through its programming, SLF equips Americans with the tools to protect and defend their rights. And when necessary, SLF takes legal action against colleges and universities. For example, SLF recently won a lawsuit against the University of New Mexico, stopping it from charging the campus Turning Point chapter higher security fees than other groups simply because the group wanted to bring Riley Gaines to campus.

If colleges and universities fail to protect students’ rights, Hermann says, “we’ll see them in court.” In the meantime, SLF urges all Americans to engage in civil discourse as Charlie Kirk did.
